Fix undesired auto update of your slack status
Slack status is a cool way to let your team know what you're up to per time. It can become an annoyance when your status changes automatically to 'ooo in Akwa Ibom State' when you are actually working your socks off in Lagos State and have probably never been to Akwa Ibom State.
You update your status to read correctly, and all seems well until about 30minutes later when you find out it keeps reverting back to the same or some other exotic message irrespective of how many times you attempt to correct it. You begin to wonder if your account has been hacked or if it is a bug.
Cause and Resolution:
Slack Apps can set statuses too. You probably have a slack app or integration causing this undesired behavior. To find the culprit, click on your slack username at the top left hand side of the slack window. In the dropdown menu, select 'Apps & Integrations'.
This takes you to the slack app directory which at first glance appears to be the wrong place as the page emphasizes adding new apps rather than removing old ones.
At the top right hand side there is an unimposing navigation menu with 'manage' as an option. Clicking 'manage' takes you to a page where you can see all apps interacting with your slack account and you can filter the list to find only apps added by you.
By reading each app's description, you would be able to tell which of them has the ability to change your status. Once you find the culprit, scroll down to the end of the app description page and click on the 'Remove App' button. Problem solved. In my case the culprit was an app called 'Spacetime'.
You can now go back to update your status and it should stay the way you left it.
